Throughout the course of their over-two-year expedition across the western United States, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark encountered hundreds of plants and animals previously unknown to those living in the eastern United States.
Thanks largely to President Thomas Jefferson’s fascination with nature, Lewis and Clark documented dozens of these animals in writings and drawings. Below are a few of their sketches, which will totally blow your mind.
