Six months ago, my husband and I were blessed with the birth of our first beautiful son, who we named Aiden Joe, or Aiden for short. We are so fortunate that Aiden is developing into a healthy boy at a normal rate, and his doctor says he is an absolute dream patient. But, unfortunately, every parent must hit a roadblock once in a while, and one that we just can’t seem to overcome is that our son ate his twin in the womb, and now, despite our best efforts, he’ll only eat things that look exactly like him.
The fact that Aiden is eating solid foods at just half a year old is every parent’s dream, but it’s been a time-consuming process to ensure that 100 percent of our son’s meals mimic how his genetically identical brother would presumably look today! Does anyone have any advice for us?
We understand that a toddler’s taste is something that changes over time, but has anyone here dealt with something similar? After his teeth came in, we gradually began incorporating more solids into Aiden’s diet, but ever since devouring his twin in utero, all he does during mealtimes is point to any food that doesn’t look like him, shake his head, and then point at himself. Kids!
…ever since devouring his twin in utero, all he does during mealtimes is point to any food that doesn’t look like him, shake his head, and then point at himself.
I’ll admit it, we usually end up caving to his demands. We tried to cheat and give him smaller snacks shaped like parts of his body, such as a single hand or a torso, just to get our boy to eat! But each time we did that, Aiden immediately tried to piece them together into something that looked exactly like him, and when it didn’t deliver, he just cried and pointed at his reflection in our kitchen mirror for hours on end.
Luckily, though, our beautiful baby boy does have a healthy appetite, and when we do give him any type of twin-shaped food, he grabs it immediately and swallows it whole, never once even letting it hit the table before putting it into his mouth!
As a new parent, I wish I could fix everything by myself, but sometimes when your child ravenously craves the body of his twin fetus, you have no choice but to ask for outside help. Frankly, we are sick of having to take perfectly cooked food and form it into something that resembles a human child. Really, how much longer are my husband and I expected to eat our baby’s food?
Any advice is greatly appreciated. We are very worried about our son!
