More than 3 billion people around the world live on less than $2.50 a day, with another 1 billion living on even less than that. Now, one of those people might be on their way to becoming the defining image of living among the poorest conditions imaginable: The United Nations is now accepting headshots in its search for the new face of global poverty.
If you’ve got a mournful but determined face gilded by premature stress wrinkles, you might be exactly what the U.N. is looking for!
In a press release this morning, the U.N. announced the beginning of its international search for the next human representative of extreme poverty. The call is totally open, too, meaning people of any ethnicity or gender can submit their headshot, though the intergovernmental organization did clarify that the person would ideally appear “young yet hardened by day-to-day third-world struggles.” As for the headshots, the United Nations has recommended taking them among the ruins of a war-torn village or near a malnourished cow, as those will increase your chances of making it further in the selection process.
If your country’s run by a warlord, be sure to mention that in your application.
No doubt, there’s going to be a ton of competition to beat if you want to land this one. But what could it hurt to throw one glossy eight-by-ten of you in front of a rusty water well into the ring? Who knows? You won’t regret it if you end up getting picked!
