So here is some serious proof that Hillary Clinton has changed the game for millions of young women in America.
Jenna Hartman is a fifth grader from Eugene, Oregon, and like so many girls her age, she was completely inspired watching Hillary accept the Democratic nomination for president. As Hillary shattered one of the highest glass ceilings in our nation, she proved to a new generation of girls that they can do anything they set their minds to. And Jenna is really taking that lesson to heart, because she’s decided that when she grows up, she wants to be Tim Kaine’s boss, too!
Yes! Get it, girl.
Not so long ago, young women didn’t even dream of supervising Tim Kaine, and now they’ve seen a strong, high-profile woman become his boss on TV. Girls just like Jenna are finally imagining what it might be like to have Tim Kaine under their employ: telling him what to do, holding him to tight deadlines, and providing the mentorship he needs to advance his career.
Hillary’s message is clear: Young women should feel empowered to step into the spotlight and become the direct supervisor of Tim Kaine.
Of course, Hillary had a tough path to becoming Tim Kaine’s boss, but that doesn’t discourage girls like Jenna. Jenna now watches all of Kaine’s speeches, and takes diligent notes on both his strengths and his opportunities for improvement. She’s checked out multiple books on management principles from her local library. And for Halloween this year, Jenna will be dressed up as—yup, you guessed it—a person who oversees Tim Kaine!
“Someday I will be Tim Kaine’s boss, just like Hillary Clinton,” says Jenna. “I will be 35 and he will be 83, and I will control him.” Jenna pauses to finish taping a poster of Hillary above her bed, before adding, “I am going to rule Tim Kaine in his old age.”
Wow. It’s hard to imagine what our Founding Fathers would have thought about a female boss of Tim Kaine, but we like to think they’d be pretty proud of what Hillary’s accomplished. Today, it’s just one woman in charge of Tim Kaine. But with girls like Jenna following HRC’s lead, someday thousands of women might be his boss. And that’s what progress looks like.
